What Is the OISAA International Symposium? More Than an Academic Forum
More Than a Scholarly Meeting
The Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia, the official Indonesian dictionary, defines a symposium as a scholarly meeting held in the open to examine a problem, with several speakers who are experts in the field. That definition stresses two things: open discussion, and intellectual weight.
For Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia (PPI) Dunia, a symposium means more than that. The International Symposium held each year is not only a stage for presenting ideas but a place where Indonesian students scattered across dozens of countries actually meet — people ordinarily separated by continents, time zones and fields of study.
Out of that meeting comes something an ordinary academic forum struggles to produce: networks that cross borders, and recommendations drafted together rather than alone.
Collaboration at the Heart of It
Collaboration between countries is therefore the core of the event, not an accessory to it. Commission sessions, scholarly forums, research presentations and cultural activities are all designed so that participants do not merely listen but help shape the outcome.
The intended result is concrete: recommendations solid enough to inform policy, rather than minutes that go no further. For Indonesian students abroad it is also a way of showing that they are not simply studying, but ready to be drawn in as part of the solution.
That spirit carries from one edition to the next, and now to the 18th International Symposium in Cairo and Luxor, Egypt.
Notes from the Previous Edition
The 17th International Symposium ran from 9 to 13 September 2025 in Ankara, Türkiye, hosted by PPI Türkiye with full support from the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara on diplomacy and logistics. PPI Dunia then covered 66 countries.
Ahead of that edition, PPI Dunia Deputy Coordinator Andika Ibrahim Nasution said he hoped the symposium would be a moment of genuine collaboration between students from every member country, and would produce recommendations capable of informing policy and setting a new direction for Indonesia.
In 2026 the number of countries under PPI Dunia rose to 68.
